The current setup has worked quite well. The raised side counters are a big help when working with long stock and a handy height for tools, parts, etc.
Several years ago, I converted a Harbor Freight mini mill to a CNC using a CNCFusion kit and stepper controllers from HobbyCNC. It's been sitting in storage for a few years now and is in need of a service and upgrade. Since it was originally a manual mill, it lacks many of the bells and whistles of proper VMC.

I was able to achieve the precision of 0.001inch what is enough for my needs. Of course it is not a replacement for a bridgeport or such but it fits into my shop and I offer no oppologies for buying one. Buy what you can use and afford now then go on to better things when time comes. the nice thing about homier and HF is the R8.
