The nice thing about this unit is it has its own motor so I'm not wearing out the Atlas drive system when vertical milling which in my opinion is a big plus compared to many other units.

The little Clausing vertical mill (made by Atlas Press, naturally) took 2M or 7B&S collets, but somebody had the good sense to give different model numbers to machines taking either collet size - the 8520 used 2M taper collets, the 8525 used 7B&S.

They are far more rigid and i would say that even that little clausing can mill just as much as a bridgy. I get why you would want to put a vertical head on it, and i have a vertical mill, but i use my barker for everything that fits in its work envelope.

They will run you a little more than the 3986 you were looking at but so will almost any other decent small vertical, even the better Chinese ones.
