The mining industry therefore stagnated and up to the early 1980s, as there were no significant new investments in Ghana‟s mining sector.

Ghana continues to suffer from unsustainable consumption of natural resources such as forests, minerals, water bodies and fisheries. Development efforts based on resource efficient and cleaner production are recognised as an essential requirement for achieving sustainable development while addressing the persistent environmental degradation.

The findings of this study encompass two opposing but interesting perspectives. On the one hand, the study showed that sustainable development is understood differently by stakeholders within the gold mining sector in Ghana, which is why gold mining companies employ different approaches in their pursuit of sustainability objectives.

The report found that the mining and minerals industry has made major advances towards sustainability but the sector faces new challenges, as governments in the global South reassert control over their natural resources, while at the same time lacking the capacity to ensure mining can contribute to sustainable development.

The sector's resources and growth can be harnessed as inputs for holistic sustainable development. Mineral commodity policies should therefore ensure that these resources serve as a catalyst for sustainable development, especially non-renewable resources. Contribution of mining to Ghana.
